November 26 – 30. A FULL Week for Some Solid Work!

Filed under: Uncategorized — mpkane @ 1:08 pm

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. We fed our stomachs (and hearts) – now let’s feed our brains! Time to pick up/kick up the studies.

In MATH we have to keep practicing fast recall of facts and continue to use math vocabulary. We will be analyzing and interpreting graphs and charts. We all do this whenever we go to the doctor, look at a bank statement, or read election results in the newspaper so parents — please point out all the examples you can to your child.

Read at home. Read at the library. Read as you travel. Make the time. Carry a book everywhere you go!

The topic of BULLYING will be discussed at the next PTA meeting, November 29.  Join in.

I hope every parent receives the PTA newsletter by email.  It’s full of all the information you need!

Another short week – and time to be thankful.

Room 210 got an awesome assistant when Ms. Craig joined us — but she left Friday for knee surgery and will return December 3. Ms. Craig has been at Ray School for several years and worked with me in summer school, 2012. We are so glad to have her!

This week’s MATH will focus on more money problems and elapsed time problems. This will keep the students thinking. How many hours do you sleep if you go to bed at 9PM and get up at 7AM?

Please encourage your child to write everyday. Even if it’s only a short note or a few reflections on their day – they will feel comfortable when more writing is expected of them in school. Research at the University of Chicago showed that students who spent 10 minutes “journaling” before a big test did better than students who did not.

Happy Thanksgiving.

SHORT WEEK – Wed. Nov. 14 to Fri. Nov. 16

First quarter report cards were good. Good ….better…. keep working, the learning builds like a skyscraper.

In Math, we’ll be doing a Money Unit. It’s hard to believe how much we see holiday advertising about spending money. A little consumer education.

We will also study Thanksgiving through History and Writing.

Remember there is a FOOD DRIVE for the needy. Students can bring non-perishable items until Nov. 20th. [cans, rice, pasta, instant soups, etc.) THANK YOU!

As always, I am grateful for your support.

November 5 – November 9

Several CALENDAR entries for you!
Friday, Nov. 9 EARLY DISMISSAL for students. 12:15 (Professional Development for teachers in the afternoon.
NO SCHOOL Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 12 and 13. Veterans Day and Report Card Pick Up. I will send home a sign up sheet with the list of times for Tuesday. I look forward to seeing everyone and going over the progress.
The RESEARCH PROJECTS are due on Wednesday, November 7. The students should have looked for their answers to their questions about the candidates and be writing paragraphs. We can do all the word processing at school. Remember, when the child dictates to you and you write for him or her, it’s still their writing, their words. They know what they’ve said and they can go back and read it and fix it. Please don’t sweat spelling and mechanics. Computers help with that. The students need to know that their writing is their IDEAS.
As always, thank you for your support.
