Oh my. Memorial Day is now behind us and we’re really in the big finish of the school year. That means we are working harder than ever in 210. We want to WRITE, learn more MATH, have a solid understanding of SOCIAL STUDIES topics and leave Ray for the summer excited about our accomplishments.

FIELD TRIP for 3rd grade on Tuesday, May 29. The 3rd grade CHIGAGO PLAY will be performed at 9:30 and 1:30 on Wednesday, June 6.

On Friday, June 8 at 6:30 p.m. The Ray’s Got Talent Show will be presented for the third year. This year’s finale will be a spin-off of the long-running television show Soul Train.

Remember, there is no school for students on Thursday, June 14. Teachers will be working that day. And it’s a VERY SHORT day on Friday, June 15!

Stay in touch with all the news by checking in to the teachers’ blogs.

Thanks for your wonderful support.

MAY 21-25

Filed under: Uncategorized — mpkane @ 10:07 pm

The end of the year is so busy, I hope in a good way. This week starts off with the Ray Olympics for 3rd grade on Monday and it’s 4th grade’s turn on Tuesday. Make sure your child has a plain white T-shirt with his number on the front and back. You can find more information on a link from the PTA’s web page.

Progress reports go home on Wednesday, May 23.

No school on Monday, May 28. Have a good Memorial Day and come back on Tuesday the 29th for the 3rd grade Chicago Trolley Field Trip. Wow! We look forward to that. If you haven’t sent the permission slip and fee of $14.00, please do so as soon as possible.

We will continue to push forward with our multi-sensory reading lessons and we are still working on math goals, especially practical applications and math vocabulary. If you know what specific terms mean, the job is almost done! The students will be making their own math dictionaries. Little quiz sessions at home would be great.

The Research/Writing project just keeps getting extended. We will get it done and I appreciate your involvement. Each student chose an important person in U.S. History and listed 7-10 questions to research. The objective is to learn how and where to do research. The end product should be a three-paragraph summary of what the student learned.

And the 3rd grade Chicago History Play is coming soon! On Wednesday, June 6, there will be two performances, 9:30 am and 1:30 pm. You won’t want to miss it.

Thanks for reading with your child regularly.

MAY 14 – 18

This week in Room 210

Tuesday – FIELD TRIP (last one!) to Kenwood Academy. Students bring a cold lunch from home and we start walking at 11:15, listen to the concert from 12:00 to 1:00, and are back at school at 1:30. Feel free to join us. These concerts have been varied and really enjoyable!

Wednesday – Research papers due. An important person in U.S. History in at least three paragraphs, in the student’s own words, after looking up answers to their questions.

I will be at an advanced multi-sensory training on Thursday and Friday and the substitute teacher who is scheduled to cover my class is excellent. If the students do good work on Thursday, they could earn a “no-homework” reward for that night. That doesn’t cover reading together – that is a reward EVERYDAY!

We will continue a comprehensive MATH review this week. When you see a score from the M.A.P.S. testing, (that is finishing this week), it’s important to remember that it covers EVERY topic in the grade level curriculum.

We continue to read Charlotte’s Web in class. Again, it would be fine to read along or reread at home.

UPCOMING important dates –

May 29 (Tuesday after Memorial Day) is the 3rd grade Chicago History Field Trip via Trolley. Please sign and return the permission form with the $14.00 fee as soon as possible. Students will need to bring a lunch from home that day.

June 6 is the famous 3rd grade Chicago History Play. There will be a morning and afternoon performance to accommodate the audiences.

There are several special events happening from now until the end of the school year so stay tuned and stay informed. Check the blogs on the Ray School website for all the news that is news!

May 7 to May 11

Today is 5-7-12. What an easy number sentence! Add a plus sign and an equal sign and you are done.

In Math, we will be reviewing lots of topics such as rounding, estimating, computation, fractions, decimals, time and money. We continue to work very hard on math vocabulary and concepts including probability and measurement. Everything you pick up in your kitchen should have a metric and U.S. customary weight. Please hand it to your child to feel and read the amount. The Spring MAPS testing is happening this week so I want the students to remember what they know!

The SOCIAL STUDIES assignment to choose an important person in U.S. History and research the questions each student wrote is big this week. Your help would be greatly appreciated because the goal is to learn how to do research, especially which internet sites to trust, and also how to look up information in books. Your son should be reading as much as possible about his choice and then write a biography in his own words. The three paragraph (or more) essay is due Wednesday, May 16.

Third Grade SPANISH projects are coming due! I hope it’s been fun to find an animal from a Spanish Speaking Country and make its habitat.

We are reading Charlotte’s Web and enjoying the beautiful language and finding there are so many things to think about.

Many important dates coming up — Field Trip to Kenwood Academy on Tuesday, May 15. We will walk to the last concert which is from 12:00 to 1:00. Please feel free to join us. It’s great, FREE, live entertainment.

All for now, but please stay tuned because there’s a LOT happening now.

Thanks, as always, for your help and support.

P.S. LOOK at the pictures of the 3rd grade play rehearsal on last week’s post.

I was so proud of the 3rd graders when I watched a little of the Chicago play rehearsal last Friday. WOW – such good focus and effort. Khalil and Zion were on the stage, learning dance routines from a professional choreographer, doing an excellent job as serious performers.  The show is scheduled for June 6 at 9:30 and 1:30.  Mark your calendars.

Students work on reading decoding and comprehension skills every morning.  Parents – please make sure you read for pleasure with your children every day outside of school.  Fiction, non-fiction, newspapers, magazines, ANYTHING.  Pick a subject. Pick an author.  30 minutes. ENJOY!

In MATH, we will continue to work on Geometry.  The students are making good progress in basic computation and other area with the “5-Minute Math Review” at the beginning of every math class.

WRITING will move from poetry to longer, researched based pieces on topics from the Social Studies curriculum. Students will choose an important person in American History and write a biography.  As always, students practice editing and rewriting.  Writing is hard but it’s worth the effort.

FRIDAY UPDATE!!!    It’s now 11:00 on May 4 and I want to post pictures I took of the 3rd graders in Play Plactice.  Hope it works.

Also, one more update.  This week I started reading Charlotte’s Web to the class.  I wasn’t sure they would like it but they do!!! And I’m so pleased.  It is a gorgeous book.  If you’d like to check a copy out of the library and read along, that would be fine.  Parts of it can be reread and enjoyed again and again.  Thanks.

Thank you for all your support and encouragement during homework time.
