Spring has Sprung!

Filed under: Uncategorized — mpkane @ 9:57 pm

The week before Spring Break does not have to be rough – not for the students of 210 who can be READY! Ready to learn and contribute to a full week.

In MATH, we continue to study measurement.  Elapsed time (adding and subtracting on the clock based on word problems) is new.  Example:  Brad’s karate class begins at 11:30 and lasts 45 minutes.  What time does it end?

Perimeter is the distance AROUND and Area is the space INSIDE measured in square units.

We’re learning how to decide between multiplication and division when converting inches to feet to yards and yards to feet to inches.

Writer’s Workshop will include “HOW TO …” and other practical applications.

READ ALOUD continues with stories of Women in American History.

Social Studies will focus on REGIONS of the United States and how people modify their environments.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be in the teachers’ lunchroom (between the gym and the student lunchroom) and our class is scheduled to shop on Thursday afternoon.  It would be great if students can bring money to purchase a book.  Parents can also shop.  Look for a note about the hours in the HW folder.  ***PICTURE DAY is Thursday, March 29.  Room 210 is scheduled for 11:45.

I hope this warm weather means that the students and their families are getting lots of fresh air and exercise. Flying a kite would be fun.

Third and fourth grades walk to Kenwood Academy for another noon concert on Tuesday this week.

We will continue to work with measurement in MATH. The students use multiplication and division to convert inches to feet and feet to inches. There is so much to learn. We will measure AREA and PERIMETER. From there, it’s on to measuring CAPACITY, liquid and volume.

Scholastic Book Fair March – 26 – 29
Spring Break – April 2-6
Report Card Pick Up – April 18, noon to 6:00 PM
Professional Development Day, NO CLASSES – April 13

Dear Parents,
Thank you for sending your children well prepared for the ISAT tests last week. They worked hard and enjoyed not having homework.

This week we will begin studying GEOMETRY and MEASUREMENT in math.

In addition to Social Studies topics from the textbook, we will read about women who played important roles in history in honor of WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH.

Next week is our walking FIELD TRIP to Kenwood Academy – Tuesday the 20th at lunch time. You are welcome to join us. We start walking over at 11:15. It’s best if students can bring a cold lunch that day.

Thanks again for reading to your children every night and for giving them lots of smiles and encouragement during homework time.

The ISAT tests have arrived!

Filed under: Uncategorized — mpkane @ 1:31 pm

This is the week where the students show off their knowledge in the form of ISAT tests. (“I sat, and I sat.”)

All teachers are asking the same

– send your children to school on time

-make sure they have had a good night’s sleep

-and encourage them to try their best.

We won’t have homework except for the reading you do before bedtime.  Please let me know if you need books.

Thanks for all your support.
