Another four-day week! January 23-26

Filed under: Uncategorized — mpkane @ 12:38 pm

With ISAT tests coming up in March and three days off in February, we have to be serious about our time in class. It may seem like the homework load is heavier but if we stick to business during the day, there won’t be as much work to send home.

In MATH, we’re continuing decimals and fractions.
In Social Studies, we’re starting a whole new topic – HISTORY.
Students in 210 must write everyday and we’re having fun with that.

REMINDER: REPORT CARDS will be sent home on Feb. 1.

All for now.

Week of January 17th

Dear Parents,
Thank you for helping your child with homework when there are directions to be read. And thank you for helping with writing the paragraph on your child’s Goals for 2012.

We have so much to cover in school and no time to lose. The students can get their work done during class if they use their time well. And my help is always available. If you notice extra homework that’s marked “unfinished during class”, that’s a sign that some time was not spent on the assignment. Thanks again.

Math – We continue to learn about decimals.
Social Studies – We continue to research topics in books and online.
Literacy – We are going to have fun with homonyms (son, sun) and students are going to read a poem to the class everyday. PLEASE – if your family has any favorite poems – send them in. Anything to recite in front of the class.

Here’s a website that your child might enjoy.

What’s new in 2012?

Filed under: Uncategorized — mpkane @ 6:31 pm

The holidays seemed to be good for everyone in room 210. The students got right back into the swing of things and were reading better than ever!

There are a few new items to note.
1. Students who arrive after 9:00 a.m. must get a tardy pass from the security guard at the front door.
2. Students are picked up from the playground at 8:55 and may grab a sack breakfast on the way to our classroom.
3. There is no school on Monday, January 16 for MLK day and no school on Friday, January 27 for teacher meetings.

What we’re working on.
MATH – Fractions and decimals as parts of a whole. Decimal place value is big(th) – TENTHS, HUNDREDTHS, THOUSANDTHS.

WRITING – We discussed personal goals for 2012 and filled in a graphic organizer. The students will write a three-paragraph essay focusing on a main idea and supporting details in each paragraph

SOCIAL STUDIES – Continued study of communities. The new skill underway is RESEARCH! Students will learn how to find good sources to answer questions and find information.
